Typhoon Survivors Celebrate Christmas One Year On
Survivors of Typhoon Reming / Durian will celebrate a better
Christmas this year, 12 months after the storm that affected more
than two million people in Bicol, washing away homes, possessions
and livelihoods.
IOM, which delivered 12,750 metric tons of shelter materials,
medical supplies, water and sanitation items, and other relief
goods to the region in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, is
now focusing on two projects to improve housing for thousands of
people who lost their homes.
A top priority is improving living conditions for over 10,000
families living in overcrowded transit camps in the provinces of
Albay and Camarines Sur.
IOM and its partners have already completed 879 of 1,050
transitional shelters funded by the Humanitarian Aid Department of
the European Commission (ECHO).
Some 570 of the 18 sq m shelters, which are constructed from
coco lumber, plywood, and corrugated iron (CGI) sheets have already
been handed over to homeless families.
IOM has also begun construction in Albay and Camarines Sur of
907 permanent homes, complete with water and sanitation, and five
multi-purpose community centres. The project is funded by the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
