The Philippines is one of the largest migrant-sending countries in the world. With over one million Filipinos leaving the country each year to migrate overseas, it is important to identify and address conditions that are of concern to public health in order to ensure safe and orderly migrations. Health assessments also help migrants and their families to integrate better into their destination countries. Upon the request of the Governments of Canada and the United Kingdom, IOM established the Manila Health Centre (MHC) in February 2013.
MHC has so far processed more than 212,000 applicants who have migrated to the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Depending on the country of destination and specific Technical Instructions, MHC offers a variety of services which include:
- Review of medical history and immunization
- Detailed physical and mental examination
- Clinical and lab investigations
- Tuberculosis (TB) detection programme
- Health promotion and education for migrants
- Consultation with a specialist
- HIV/AIDS testing and counseling
- Anti-fraud measures
